SIGNINGS
USD announced the signing of four high school athletes to national letters of intent.
Laura King and Michelle Brovelli of Marin County will attend USD and play on the women’s basketball team. Brovelli is a 5-foot-10 guard/forward who averaged 10.8 points as a junior at San Rafael High School, and King is a 5-7 1/2 guard whop averaged 14.5 points as a junior at Terra Linda High.
USD’s baseball team got the signature of Ryan Burkeen to a national letter of intent. He is a catcher from Portland, Ore., where he hit .348 at Central Catholic High.
And Kristine Smith, one of the top tennis players in Canada, also signed to attend USD.
BASKETBALL
After an 11-hour flight to Anchorage on Saturday and after spending Sunday learning the sport of dog sledding, the Torrey Pines boys’ basketball team took the court for its first game in the Great Alaskan Shootout and convincingly beat Bartlett (Alaska), 72-60.
Scott Pollard scored 17 points for Torrey Pines, grabbed 10 rebounds and set a new tournament record for blocked shots with seven.
Teammate Eddie Montolvo scored 16 as he sunk four of five from three-point range. Torrey Pines’ Craig Brown led everyone in points (20) and assists (five).
