USX Plans Steel Price Rise: USX Corp. plans to raise prices on a wide range of steel products by about 6%, a spokesman for the nation’s largest steelmaker said. The new pricing structure by USX’s steel company, U.S. Steel, is scheduled for April 1 and could affect a wide range of steel buyers. Steel prices would increase by $25 to $40 per ton, depending on the type. U.S. Steel sales managers were notified of the increases in a memo and instructed to review the increases with customers immediately. An analyst who watches Pittsburgh-based USX viewed the planned price increases as a positive sign for the economy, because if steel customers accept the higher prices, it means they believe that consumers will also pay higher prices for goods.
