OUTLOOK
“I know I usually play down my team, but I think we’re going to be pretty good this year,” McKnight said. Oh-oh. If McKnight, traditionally a pessimist about his team’s chances, can’t bring himself to do the old soft-shoe this year, better look out. Of course, everyone seems to like Mater Dei’s chances, but then what’s not to like? Four starters are back from a team that reached the semifinals of the Southern Section 5-A playoffs. Not only that, but 11 of the top 13 players are underclassmen. If there’s one standout player on this team, it’s Geary, who has orally committed to play at Arizona. He is a tremendous defender and is great in the open court. Geary, the league’s MVP last season, averaged 13.4 points last season. Wilborn (6.2 ppg) is a force inside, and Sufi (6.1) has improved as a point guard. Jackson and Matthews should contribute more as full-time starters. And still there’s more. There is so much depth, in fact, that Simon, thought to be the next great Monarch, will struggle to get playing time.
