NHL ROUNDUP : Nordiques Can’t Keep Up With Red Wings

The Quebec Nordiques were beginning to think they were a pretty good hockey team. They went to Detroit Thursday night on a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1), their best in five years.

But after the game against the hottest team in the NHL, they realized they still have a way to go.

Sergei Federov set up the first goal and scored the second, and the Red Wings skated to a 4-1 victory.

Their ninth consecutive victory at home gave the Red Wings a 12-1-3 record in the last 16 games and increased their lead in the Norris Division to seven points.

The Red Wings took control after going almost the first 11 minutes without having to stop a shot on goal. The Nordiques had 16 shots on goal all night.

Boston 5, Montreal 2--Ray Bourque assisted on three goals and scored another at Boston to help end the Bruins’ three-game losing streak and the Canadiens’ three-game winning streak.

Three Bruins had their first goals: Barry Pederson, recently re-signed as a free agent; Scott Arniel, playing in his fourth game after being hurt, and rookie John Byce, called up from Maine shortly before the game.

Toronto 1, Philadelphia 1--It was probably fitting that the two last-place teams tied at Philadelphia. Rod Brind’Amour of the Flyers and Mike Foligno scored in the first period.

San Jose 6, Edmonton 3--The Sharks scored four goals in less than 10 minutes in the first period at Daly City, Calif., and won for the seventh time in 32 games.

Vancouver 7, Minnesota 5--Jyrki Lumme scored a goal and assisted on three others at Vancouver, and the Canucks ended their slump. The Canucks had lost four of their previous five games.
