In another nonconference men’s basketball game:

Christ College Irvine 89, Bethany 76--D’Andre Brown had 23 points and 12 rebounds and Doug Grove added 21 points for host Christ College Irvine (7-8).

In the championship game of the men’s La Jolla basketball tournament:

UC San Diego 81, Southern California College 75--Despite a game-high 26 points by Rick Witmer, the Vanguards lost for only the second time in 13 games.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

UC Santa Barbara 75, UC Irvine 57--The Gauchos opened the second half with a 14-0 run as the Anteaters lost for the fourth time in five games.

Irvine (4-7, 0-2) trailed 37-33 at halftime, before Cori Close scored six points and Barbara Beainy four in Santa Barbara’s decisive spurt in front of 372 at the Bren Center.

Close and Beainy led the Gauchos (9-2, 2-0) with 16 each and Erika Kienast added 15 and Lisa Crosskey 11.

Irvine guard Kathy Lizarraga injured her left knee with 8:18 left in the first half and did not return to the game. No diagnosis was made and a further examination is planned for Monday.

In the consolation game of the Grand Canyon women’s basketball tournament:

Chapman 68, Regis 62--Linda Kirby scored a game-high 19 points and was the only Panther named to the all-tournament team.

In the consolation game of the California Baptist women’s tournament:

California Baptist 80, Southern California College 72--Cyndi Lyons scored 17 and Lori Halliday 14 in a losing effort for the Vanguards (6-9).

In the UC Irvine swimming invitational:

Anteater Wins Race--Danielle Pajer became the first Irvine woman to win an event in the meet, now in its 13th year, by taking the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best time of 1 minute 9.72 seconds.

Pajer, a junior and a 1988 Mission Viejo High graduate, was also fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.71.

On the men’s side, Pajer’s brother Brian, competing for the NOVA Swimming Club, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.26.

The second and final day of the meet begins at 9 a.m. today at Heritage Park.
