City Council Calls for Protection of Dolphins

Malibu, which once declared itself a haven for the homeless, now is making a stand for the welfare of dolphins.

The City Council this week unanimously passed a resolution declaring Malibu a “human-dolphin shared environment” and called for the protection and preservation of all marine mammals. The measure calls for improving “the relationship between human beings and cetaceans.”

“This is sending a message to the state and federal government that, at least in Malibu, these animals will be protected,” said Mary Frampton, director of Save Our Coast.

The resolution calls for an expanded Marine Mammal Protection Act, and it also decries the “abusive exploitation of dolphins and whales for research and military purposes.”
