Notre Dame made Coach John MacLeod’s return to New York an enjoyable experience by upsetting No. 8 North Carolina, 88-76, Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

MacLeod, who resigned as coach of the New York Knicks after last year’s NBA playoffs, saw his team improve to 4-5 as LaPhonso Ellis scored 31 points and Daimon Sweet added 30.

“I was looking forward to coming back,” said MacLeod, who replaced Digger Phelps at Notre Dame. “I always felt very comfortable here, although it wasn’t too comfortable all the time.”

The Fighting Irish took the lead for good six minutes into the game and held off two second-half rallies by North Carolina (10-2), which saw a four-game winning streak end.
