In nonconference women’s gymnastics:
Cal State Fullerton 185.10, Stanford 184.05--Celeste Delia had the top score in two individual events, was tied in a third and won the all-around title, leading the 20th-ranked Titans an upset of the 18th-ranked Cardinal in the season opener for both teams in front of 3,111 at Titan Gym.
In the National Collegiate Tennis Classic:
Scott Eliminated--Danielle Scott, a Corona del Mar High graduate, was upset by unseeded Mamie Ceniza, 6-3, 6-4, in a semifinal match at Palm Springs. It was Scott’s first loss to the UCLA senior after six victories.
“I tried my hardest, but I didn’t have it,” the second-seeded Scott, a University of Arizona senior, said. “She played really well and painted the lines on the important points.”
Scott began the day with a 6-1, 6-2 quarterfinal victory over sixth-seeded Tracy Hiete of Duke.
“That was a tough match,” Scott said. “The score didn’t tell how hard it was. The games were really close.”
In a quarterfinal doubles match, Scott and Banni Redhair, seeded third, defeated Jenny Hilt and Cammie Foley of UCLA, 6-3, 7-6.
In Big West Conference men’s swimming:
UC Irvine 110, Fresno State 95--Pat Keenan (500-yard freestyle, 1,000-yard freestyle) and Jeff Klatt (200-yard individual medley, 200-yard butterfly) each won two events as the Anteaters (5-1, 1-0) won at Crawford Hall pool.
In Big West Conference women’s swimming:
Fresno State 138, UC Irvine 67--Freshman Laurle Hooper was the Anteaters’ (7-3, 0-1) only individual winner, swimming the 1,000-yard freestyle in a seasonal best 10 minutes 34.5 seconds at Crawford Hall pool.
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:
Azusa Pacific 66, Southern California College 65--Wendy Thomas made two free throws with 21 seconds remaining to give host Azusa Pacific (7-8, 1-1) a 66-63 lead. Darnell Good missed a three-pointer for SCC (7-11, 0-2), and Kristen Bevis’ basket at the buzzer left SCC a point shy.
