Ross Adds Four to His Charger Staff

Chargers Coach Bobby Ross said Saturday he has added two more Georgia Tech assistants, Ralph Friedgen and George O’Leary, former Charger Carl Mauck and Dale Lindsey to his staff.

With four more assistants, Ross has 10 on his staff. Only the defensive coordinator’s position, which has been offered to University of Florida athletic director Bill Arnsparger, remains to be filled.

Ross and Arnsparger met Saturday in San Diego, and Ross was awaiting word today whether the ex-Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator was interested in the Chargers job.

Friedgen, 44, will be the running game coordinator and coach the tight ends and H-backs. He has coached collegiately for 20 years, 15 of them under Ross at The Citadel, Maryland and Georgia Tech. While at Georgia Tech from 1977-81, Friedgen was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

O’Leary, 45, will be the defensive line coach. For the past five seasons at Georgia Tech, O’Leary was the team’s defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. Before that, O’Leary spent seven years (1980-86) as the defensive line coach at Syracuse.

Mauck, who played center for the Chargers from 1971-74, will coach the offensive lineman. He spent 13 seasons in the NFL as a player and eight as a coach. Last season, Mauck, 44, was the offensive line coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also spent four seasons with the New Orleans Saints (1982-85) and three with the Kansas City Chiefs (1986-88).

Lindsey, who turns 49 next week, will be the linebackers coach. He was Tampa Bay’s linebackers coach in 1991 after holding a similar job for New England 1990 and working as defensive coordinator at Southern Methodist University (1988-89). He played for the Cleveland Browns from 1965-72.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Host Point Loma Nazarene saw Kurt Ronnow make five three-point shots in the second half to lead George Fox College to an 88-80 victory in the Crusader Classic championship game. Ronnow had 21 points, and 7-foot-2 center Dave Wilson, the tournament MVP, had 15 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and two blocked shots. Rusty Fallin had 22 and Donnie Buettner 20 for PLNC, which fell to 8-7 after leading, 32-31, at halftime. William Jewell College (9-8) defeated Southern Nazarene University (5-13) in the first game, 84-69.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Five San Diego State players scored in double figures as the Aztecs destroyed visiting Cal State Northridge, 97-41, in a nonconference game. Falisha Wright scored 22 and Michelle Suman had 21 on nine of 10 shooting from the field to lead the Aztecs (8-4), who shot 55% from the field. Elisha Johns scored 15 and Tammy Blackburn and Kieishsha Garnes added 12 each for SDSU, which led 58-21 at halftime. CSUN fell to 0-18.

The University of San Diego turned a one-point halftime deficit into a 76-72 at Colorado State. The Rams couldn’t stop USD down low, as forward Jill Shaver (15 points), center Chris Enger (11 points, 12 rebounds) and forward Lynda Jones (12 points) dominated the scoring. The Toreras improved to 5-7 with the nonconference victory.

OLYMPICS

Valerie Lafon of San Diego was one of nine athletes selected for the 1992 U.S. Olympic judo team during trials held in Colorado Springs, Colo. Lafon automatically qualified at 106 pounds because she entered the competition ranked first in her division and won.
