A father and son battled three gun-wielding men who barged into their home Tuesday night in an attempted robbery, police said.

During the fight, the intruders pistol-whipped the father, 45, and his 15-year-old son before fleeing in a car, said Sgt. Bill Martin.

Both victims, whose names were withheld, were taken to Humana Hospital-Westminster for cuts and bruises, police said.

The incident began when three men, about 18 to 20 years old, knocked on the door of the home on Briarcliff Drive at 7:33 p.m. When a family member opened the door, the three forced their way inside and were immediately confronted by the man and his son.

The son fought with one man while the father battled the other two, police said. During the fight, one of the robbers fired once or twice from a .380 semiautomatic handgun but did not hit anyone, police said.

Also at home during the attempted robbery were the man’s wife, 38, a second son, 10, and a daughter, 9. They were not injured, Martin said.
