PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : University Ends Its Sea View League Losing Streak at 25

University rolled to a 22-point lead after three quarters and held on to defeat Corona del Mar, 78-66, Friday night at University High School to stop a 25-game Sea View League losing streak that had spanned parts of four seasons.

Luis Venegas scored 20 points, Ron Prashker added 18 and Josh Whelihan 13 for University (7-13, 1-4 in league), which had not won in league play since the next-to-last game of the 1988-89 season. Darnell Dowdy added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Jason Clark scored 27 points and Theo Rokos 15 for Corona del Mar (7-12, 0-5), including 18 on three-point shots.

In Empire League boys’ basketball:

Katella 59, El Dorado 54--Katella (8-9, 3-2) led, 11-2, after one quarter, but still had to hold off El Dorado (2-3) in the last minute.

After El Dorado’s Mike Johnson tied the score on a three-pointer with about 1 1/2 minutes left, Brian Carlson hit a 10-footer to give Katella a two-point lead.

Nick Roditis stole the ensuing inbounds pass and made a layup to make it a four-point lead and put the game away. Carlson scored 20 points and Roditis 13 for Katella.

Esperanza 52, Cypress 41--Esperanza (11-10, 4-1) made nine of nine free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off Cypress. Matt Kordik scored 15 points to lead Esperanza and teammate Randy Wilson had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Los Alamitos 83, Loara 46--Steve Carbone had 20 points and broke the Los Alamitos record for steals in a single game with 11. Jason Cunningham added 19 points and eight rebounds for Los Alamitos (13-8, 5-0).

In Garden Grove League boys’ basketball:

Rancho Alamitos 77, Garden Grove 72--Nehravanah Thonexay had 24 points for visiting Rancho Alamitos (8-8, 5-2). Scott Flores had 17 points and five three-pointers and Cornell Archer had 14 points and 16 rebounds for Garden Grove (7-10, 3-4).

Kennedy 89, Los Amigos 45--Germaine Galloway had 19 points and Jeff Cummins added 18 for Kennedy (7-0 in league).

Pacifica 58, Bolsa Grande 39--Chris Vlasic scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds for visiting Pacifica.

In the South Coast League:

Irvine 83, San Clemente 55--Jado Lee scored 28 points, including three three-pointers, in three quarters for host Irvine (17-4, 4-1). Brian Boothroyd scored 17 for Irvine, which led, 44-28, at the half. Marcus Guild scored 24 points, including 15 of 18 from the free-throw line for San Clemente (8-12, 2-3).

El Toro 57, Mission Viejo 41--El Toro (7-12, 3-2) opened a 29-9 lead early in the second quarter and moved into third place with an easy victory. Mike Meier (nine points) and Jeff Bone (seven points) combined for 16 of El Toro’s first 29 points.

In Olympic League boys’ basketball:

Orange Lutheran 56, Capistrano Valley Christian 51--Geoff Greene’s short jumper with 2:38 left put the Lancers ahead for good. Orange Lutheran (8-10, 4-2) trailed, 46-42, after three quarters, but outscored the Eagles, 14-5, in the final quarter. Chad Mihr had 11 points for Orange Lutheran and Jeff Courvoisier added 10.

Brethren Christian 63, Whittier Christian 46--Tim Osborn and Chiron Hart each scored 14 points to lead Brethren Christian (15-2, 6-0). Tyler Ream had 19 points for Whittier Christian (9-8, 3-3).

In Academy League boys’ basketball:

St. Margaret’s 61, St. Michael’s Prep 47--Lupe Rodriguez scored 19 points and Damian Raibon had 16 points and 12 rebounds for host St. Margaret’s (6-6, 3-0).

In Garden Grove league girls’ basketball:

Rancho Alamitos 75, Garden Grove 53--Anita Stecker had 26 points and 15 rebounds for visiting Rancho Alamitos (10-2, 7-0). Nichol Murray had 23 points for Garden Grove (8-6, 6-1).

In Arrowhead League girls’ basketball:

Calvary Chapel 84, Southern California Christian 7--Sarah Younger scored 30 points and had 11 steals and six assists for Calvary Chapel (12-3, 6-0).
