Simi Valley homeowners who install ultra-low-flush toilets may be eligible to receive a $100 rebate under a program approved by the City Council.

The rebate program, which the council approved unanimously Monday, is part of the city’s campaign to encourage water conservation. The program will go into effect Monday.

The rebates will be given to the first 1,000 residents who qualify, said Ronald Coons, director of public works. Residents must be homeowners who purchase their water from the city and must choose their toilets from a list approved by the city’s water provider, Calleguas Municipal Water District.

And, homeowners must consent to an inspection of the toilet after it is installed.

City staff estimated that the average cost to homeowners who want to replace their toilets with an ultra-low-flush model will be about $250.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, which supplies Calleguas, has agreed to divide the cost of the rebate program with Calleguas, which will share the remaining costs of the program with the city.
