Kidnapers Free Son of Prominent Chilean Publisher

SANTIAGO, Chile — Kidnapers have freed the son of Chile’s leading newspaper publisher, Agustin Edwards Eastman, after 145 days in captivity, officials said.
Government sources said a ransom was paid for Christian Edwards, but no further details were made public about the negotiations to end Chile’s longest kidnaping.
Edwards, 33, was released Saturday evening in a working class neighborhood of Santiago and took a taxi to the home of his family, owners of the El Mercurio newspaper chain.
Edwards, manager of El Mercurio’s provincial dailies, disappeared Sept. 9.
Police sources said the kidnapers were believed to be foreigners and probably members of an armed leftist group.
