Mystery continued Sunday to surround the shooting deaths of a musical-instrument store owner and a musical-instrument salesman whose bodies were found in the store owner’s home here in an exclusive residential area overlooking Ridgeline Country Club.

The Orange Police Department released the identities of the two victims Sunday, but officers said they had no suspects or motive for the double slayings.

The victims were identified as Robert George Wrate, 51, owner of West Coast Drum Center in Santa Ana, and Raymon Kim Johnson, 42, a musical-instrument salesman from Whittier.

Police said the bodies of the two men were found at 12:30 p.m. Saturday inside Wrate’s million-dollar house at 1127 N. Ridgeline Road.

Police said both men had been shot to death, but officers withheld specifics, such as type of gun, estimated time of the shootings and in which room the bodies were found.

An Orange policeman said that officers are investigating the case as a double homicide and that there is no indication of a murder-suicide.

“The identity of the suspect or suspects and the motive is unknown at this time,” said Detective Sgt. Larry Pore in a statement. The statement did not disclose whether anything had been stolen from the house or the two victims.

According to police officers in Whittier, Johnson had a Friday business appointment with Wrate.

Wrate’s musical-instrument store at 1317 E. St. Gertrude Place in Santa Ana is advertised as being “Orange County’s professional drum shop . . . for drum stars now & future.”

Johnson did not return home Friday night, and his wife notified Whittier police early Saturday morning that he was missing, Whittier Police Lt. Steve Milakovich said.

Milakovich said Whittier police asked Orange officers to check Wrate’s residence after learning of the scheduled business meeting between Wrate and Johnson.

When officers from Orange went inside Wrate’s home shortly after noon on Saturday, they found the bodies. Police did not say how many times each man had been shot.

A neighbor told reporters that she had heard a sharp sound about 11 a.m. Friday that she described as being louder than a car backfiring.

Police, however, would not discuss the neighbor’s observations or say if it corresponded to the time of death of one or both of the men.

Orange Police Sgt. Armando Marrujo said anyone who might have information in the case should call the Orange Police Department.

Milakovich said police do not know why the two men went to Wrate’s house.

But Milakovich said there is no indication that either man was kidnaped or forced to go to the North Ridgeline Road residence.
