Judge Says UPI Is in Danger of Folding: The New York judge overseeing United Press International’s bankruptcy proceedings said the news agency faces the danger of shutting down next month and gave creditors the right to fashion a plan to save it. After reviewing the wire service’s financial data, Judge Francis Conrad said there’s “a very real possibility that (UPI) won’t be in business by the end of April.” He said UPI’s projected losses of $100,000 a month through the end of the year are “intolerable.” In order to keep the 85-year-old company going, the judge said, creditors may have to put forward their own Chapter 11 plan.
