Sierra Madre : Asbestos Dust Closes Library

The Sierra Madre Public Library was closed last week after asbestos dust shook loose from an acoustical ceiling during repairs.

Dust began falling from the ceiling Feb. 25 as roofers nailed sheeting to the library’s roof. City officials had the dust analyzed and found it contained up to 5% asbestos.

City officials, who are seeking bids to decontaminate the library, said the facility could open late next week if the work is completed swiftly.

Meanwhile, the library staff is working out of City Hall and patrons have been asked to hold onto overdue library books, which can be returned without late fees after the library reopens.
