Playoff bound: The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team won the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. postseason tournament and will participate in the NCAA Division II playoffs that begin March 12 or 13.

Pomona, ranked 15th in Division II, improved to 23-5 with a 74-55 victory over Chapman in the semifinals and a 57-45 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the CCAA tournament final.

Senior forward Leslie Ellis of Pomona was selected co-most valuable player of the CCAA.

Cal State Bakersfield (21-6) plays Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-11) in the other first-round game.

Pomona’s victory over Cal State L.A., combined with San Bernardino’s 86-83 victory over UC Riverside and San Luis Obispo’s 70-67 win over Bakersfield, earned the Broncos the tournament’s final bid based on their record in head-to-head competition.

End of the road: Pasadena City College and Mt. San Antonio College concluded their men’s basketball seasons last weekend with losses in the first round of the 32-team Southern California regional playoffs.

Pasadena, seeded 32nd, lost to top-seeded Ventura, 73-59.

Ventura (30-4), which won its 15th consecutive game, made only 21 of 66 shots and had 20 turnovers.

The Pirates, however, used a pressure defense that forced Pasadena (15-16) into 28 turnovers.

“It’s just good, pressure defense,” said Pasadena guard Don Mitchell, who scored a team-high 18 points and had nine rebounds. “We just couldn’t close the gap closer than 11 points.”

Compton (26-5) defeated Mt. SAC, 100-87. The Mounties finished 13-15.

Best of the best: Four wrestlers from San Gabriel Valley high schools qualified for the state championship meet by winning their divisions on Saturday at Fountain Valley High.
