COUNTYWIDE : CHP Will Use Radar in Santiago Canyon

California Highway Patrol officers will soon begin using radar guns to catch speeders along about 15 miles of curvy Santiago Canyon Road.

CHP officers will begin ticketing speeders based on the readings starting April 3 along the section from Orange to Live Oak Canyon Road, CHP Officer Angel Johnson said.

Traffic along the road has increased fivefold in recent years, she said, making it impractical to use only patrol cars to catch speeders. Signs alerting drivers to the radar have already been posted along the two-lane road.

It has not been determined how many radar-equipped cars will patrol the road, CHP Lt. Dwight McKenna said.

In 1991, 13 people died along Santiago Canyon Road as a result of driving too fast, the CHP said.

A recent study by the CHP showed that 79% of the drivers along the curvy road drive more than the posted 55 m.p.h, Johnson said.
