COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Sweeps San Diego St. in Volleyball

Matt Unger recorded a match-high 56 assists and Ken Lynch and Axel Hagar combined for 36 kills to lead Cal State Northridge to a sweep of San Diego State in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Cal State Northridge on Wednesday.

The game scores were 15-10, 15-8, 15-8.

CSUN’s team attack percentage was .348, more than double San Diego State’s .154 average, and the Matadors attacked at a .618 percentage in the second game.

Northridge, which will play host to Ball State tonight, improved to 9-6, 4-2 in WIVA play. San Diego State is 4-13, 1-8.

In other volleyball matches:

Pierce d. Santa Monica, 15-11, 15-11, 15-10--Rob Beard had 18 kills and Lee Bradford added 11 for Pierce, which improved to 1-1 in Western Conference State play with a win at home.

BASEBALL

East L.A. 5, Mission 4--Alonso Mendoza’s bases-loaded single with nobody out in the ninth gave East L.A. (9-4, 2-0) a Southern California Athletic Conference win.

Gabe Chavez was three for five and drove in two runs for visiting Mission (2-7-1, 0-1).

Cal Lutheran 8, Westmont 2--The Kingsmen (13-0) scored four runs in the first inning on one hit and four walks en route to their 13th consecutive nonconference victory.

Eric Johnson, who hit a solo home run in the second inning, and Bob Farber each had two hits for Cal Lutheran.

Darrell McMillin hit his 10th home run in the fourth.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Fullerton 2-4, Cal State Northridge 1-2--Karin Knoop, a former Burroughs High and Valley College standout, singled in K. C. Clark with the winning run in the opener and had two hits and drove in two runs in the nightcap as the visiting Matadors (14-13) were swept by the fifth-ranked Titans at Fullerton.

Patti Pearson’s first-inning single drove in Beth Calcante with Northridge’s lone run of the first game.

In the second game, Missy Cress’ fourth-inning sacrifice fly tied the score, 2-2, but Fullerton (8-6) scored twice in its half to put the game away.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal State Long Beach 6, Cal State Northridge 3--After tying Long Beach, 3-3, in singles matches, the Matadors (4-4) dropped all three doubles matches and lost the nonconference match at Northridge.
