HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Royal Extends Volleyball Streak

The Royal High boys’ volleyball team defeated Santa Barbara, 15-9, 15-9, 16-14, and extended its home win streak to 39 in a nonleague opener Wednesday night.

“Santa Barbara is no country bumpkin,” Royal Coach Bob Ferguson said. “This proves a lot about our team.”

Santa Barbara is ranked No. 2 in Division V-A.

The Highlanders have not lost in their gymnasium since the school’s inaugural home match March 16, 1989.

Travis Ferguson had 54 set assists to lead the Highlanders, who are ranked No. 2 in Division IV-A. Steve Hodge had 22 kills and Brett Osterhoudt added 14.

BASEBALL

Cleveland 7, Narbonne 6--Host Cleveland sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth inning and five scored, breaking a 2-2 tie in a San Fernando tournament game. It was the season opener for both teams.

Dave Cipolla’s two-run double keyed the rally, and Rob Rundquist, Julio Marcial and Manny Valencia also drove in runs in the fifth.

Starting pitcher Mike Petruzates allowed six runs and five hits in five innings.

San Fernando 8, Birmingham 5--Ethan Rodriguez went two for two and Jose Nunez was two for three to lead the Tigers (1-0) in a first-round game of the San Fernando tournament.

The Tigers took a 4-0 lead in the first inning on two hits and four walks.

Don Wingo went two for three with two RBIs for Birmingham (0-1).

Granada Hills 9, Grant 8--Granada Hills (1-0) scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of a San Fernando tournament game.

A bases-loaded triple by winning pitcher Heath McElwee tied the score, and after two intentional walks, McElwee scored on a balk. There were six walks in the inning.

Matt Livingstone relieved Mike Cuthbert during Grant’s seven-run first inning and pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run and three hits while striking out three. McElwee pitched two innings and allowed two hits.

McElwee was three for four and scored two runs. Scott Berger was three for four with a double and a triple.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Alemany 97, Saugus 61--Freshman Rosemary Immordino finished first in the 50- and 500-meter freestyle races and swam a leg in the 200-medley and 400-freestyle relays to lead the Indians (2-0) in a nonleague meet.
