“We could finish anywhere from third to sixth in the league,” Sorce said. The heart of Westminster’s lineup will be Cowley and Bailey, who are two of the best hitters in the league. Cowley, who will bat third, had 20 hits, five stolen bases and 14 RBIs last season. He was also 4-1 with a 3.25 earned-run average as a pitcher. Bailey, a second-team all-league selection, batted .378 in league with 28 hits, 17 runs scored and 15 RBIs. He will bat cleanup. Besanson, who sat out last season, is one of the top athletes in the league. Sorce plans to utilize his speed at the leadoff position. Among the top newcomers is Murphy, the most valuable player on the junior varsity team, and Hall, a transfer from Mater Dei. Two other newcomers, Jason Fabisiak and Aristeo Rodriguez, are battling for the starting catcher position. Sorce, on the league race: “Ocean View is the best offensively, Huntington Beach has two excellent pitchers and Edison is talented every year. Plus, you’ve got Brian Ponchak ready to explode at Fountain Valley. It should be another interesting year.” Sorce picked Ocean View to win the league for the third straight year. Westminster will play Leuzinger in the opening round of the El Segundo Tournament Friday.
