SCOUTS’ HONOR: Boy Scouts have been trained in first aid for decades. But now they can take it a step further and get a merit badge in medicine, above, thanks to Dr. Craig Kliger of the UCI ophthalmology department. A onetime Eagle Scout, Kliger came up with the idea for the new badge and helped develop the requirements to earn it. . . . Kliger says badge seekers must take part in an event such as a blood-pressure screening or health fair and know the different medical specialties. The badge is “long overdue,” he says. “There have been dentistry and law badges for 16 years.”
