UCSD, at Home in Desert, Continues Best Start Ever

UC San Diego’s baseball team went out of its way to play a home game against Wayne State (Neb.) on Sunday, and the Tritons were rewarded with a 6-3 victory in the nonconference matchup.

Because of wet grounds at UCSD’S La Jolla campus, both teams bused to Imperial Valley to play the game at College of the Desert.

The victory gave UCSD, a Division III school, a 10-0-1 record. The Tritons’ previous best start was 5-0 in 1988.

Offensively for UCSD, Guy Cataldo went two for four and scored two runs, and Ernie Isola and David Rex each drove in two runs.

Brent Hansen started and went six innings. He struck out five and improved to 2-0.

Wayne State, a Division II team, fell to 5-2.

The University of San Diego pushed across a run in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth to come from behind and take a 6-4 victory over the University of San Francisco.

Sophomore John Fenn, a graduate of Granite Hills High School, drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the eighth. Earlier in the inning, USD (8-9) tied the game on Ed Scofield’s sacrifice fly to center field.

Pat Crema went nine innings for his second victory. USF fell to 5-14.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State defeated visiting UNLV, 5-1. The Aztecs’ Kerry Safdie defeated Misha Jevtic 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, and Chris Numbers defeated Eric Aanes, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Other singles winners for SDSU (6-1) were Michael Sass, Jeff Belloli and Scott Hansen. UNLV fell to 4-3.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC San Diego, the No. 3-ranked team in the nation, opened its season with a second-place finish at the Great Davis Shootout.

UCSD beat San Diego State, 5-0, in the semifinal game before losing to No. 1-ranked UC Davis, 8-3, in the final.

Jamie Dailey finished with 18 goals in five games for UCSD (4-1).
