OUTLOOK

Fullerton figures to mount a strong challenge to defending champion La Habra this spring after finishing third last season. The Indians have seven returning starters from last season, including Kennedy (10-8), who had an 0.85 earned-run average, pitched three no-hitters and struck out 219, second in the county to Kennedy’s Cheryl Longeway. Although the Indians lost all-league center fielder Malissa Hernandez and catcher Mary Oregel, now at Fullerton College, they appear to have the pitching, team speed and defense to improve on last season’s record. Weber is concerned about the absence of a power hitter and offense. Wangler (14 runs batted in) and DeLaTorre (12 RBIs) are the only proven run producers from last season. Freilich (15 stolen bases) and Sieminski (11 steals) are the main baserunning threats, if Weber can find the offense to drive them home. The arrival of basketball standout Sommer McLane will allow Weber to have a backup for Kennedy on the mound, but she will play primarily behind the plate.
