Museum Delays Expansion Plan
LA JOLLA — In a press conference Monday to formally announce its name change to the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, officials of the former San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art also announced that the museum has postponed expansion of its La Jolla building until 1993. The museum had announced it would break ground in 1992 for the new addition designed by Philadelphia architect Robert Venturi.
Primary cause for the delay is the ongoing review of a proposed fence for grounds behind the museum, museum director Hugh M. Davies said.
The museum’s proposed downtown annex at America Plaza, which has not yet received final approval from city agencies, will likely open this November, Davies said.
To accommodate the revised timeline, the Anish Kapoor exhibit in the the La Jolla museum galleries has been extended through July 5, and two shows by Noboru Tsubaki and Julie Bozzi, originally scheduled for the downtown space, now will be presented in La Jolla from July 17 through Sept. 26.
