NHL ROUNDUP : Capitals Complete Garden Sweep of Rangers
The New York Rangers are the NHL’s best team, except when they play the Washington Capitals.
The Capitals continued their dominance of the Rangers on Monday night with a 5-2 victory that gave them a sweep of the three games played in Madison Square Garden--where the Rangers are 23-5-3 against the rest of the NHL this season. Washington has a 5-2-0 margin over New York in the season series.
Dale Hunter assisted on three goals and Don Beaupre made 27 saves for the Capitals, who trail New York by three points in the Patrick Division. Washington plays eight of its last 11 games at home.
Quebec 2, Hartford 0--Stephane Fiset made 30 saves for his first NHL shutout at Quebec and the Nordiques maintained their slim playoff hopes.
Quebec got goals from Bill Lindsay and Owen Nolan to move within 10 points of the fourth-place Whalers in the Adams Division. The Whalers have 14 games to play, one more than Quebec.
Lindsay opened the scoring with 50 seconds to play in the first period. The rookie, who had one goal in 15 previous games since his recall, was deep in the slot when he redirected Joe Sakic’s pass from the left circle past goaltender Kay Whitmore.
Quebec sealed the victory when Nolan got his 36th goal with 1:40 to play in the game.
