Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight calls Geary the best player in Orange County, and Geary proved last week that he’s also a winner.

Geary, who will play basketball for Arizona next season, earned his second Southern Section championship ring by leading Mater Dei to a 65-55 victory over Riverside North in the Division I-A finals Saturday. It was the seventh Southern Section title in the past 10 years for the Monarchs.

Geary, who averages 15 points and six assists, had 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots in the final.

He sparked a 12-0 run in the third quarter, first scoring on a driving layup, then assisting Marmet Williams for a fast-break dunk, to help Mater Dei regain control after North had closed to within 45-42.

Geary also had 15 points in Mater Dei’s 68-49 semifinal victory over Ventura Buena.

Other top performers:

Tom Airey, who helped Capistrano Valley win the Division I-AA basketball championship, made eight three-pointers in a 67-55 semifinal victory over Long Beach Jordan, breaking the Orange County single-season record of 126, which he set last season.

Tim Gorman, the Los Alamitos goalie who recorded eight saves in a 1-0 shutout of Anaheim in the Division 2-A soccer championship game, giving the Griffins their first section boys’ soccer championship.
