COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Welles’ Homer Sparks Pierce to 6-5 Win Over Santa Barbara

Robby Welles’ two-run home run in the seventh inning helped Pierce College to a 6-5 win over host Santa Barbara in a Western State Conference baseball game Tuesday.

Welles’ homer, his seventh, gave Pierce (14-1-1, 6-0 in conference play) a 6-3 lead.

After Santa Barbara touched Pierce starter Mike Eby (4-0) for two runs in the eighth, cutting its deficit to 6-5, Paul Geller pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.

In other baseball games:

Valley 9, Glendale 2--After surviving a rocky start, Jake Loveridge pitched six innings of shutout ball in Valley’s WSC victory.

Kevin Walsh, Sean Lewis and Carlos Olmos each had two hits for host Valley (8-10, 3-2).

Ventura 5, Santa Monica 3 (12 innings)--Joe Reyes’ two-run single in the top of the 12th was the difference in Ventura’s WSC win at Santa Monica.

Tim Cornish, Mitch King and Kwinn Knight each had two hits for Ventura (10-3, 4-0).

Moorpark 6, Canyons 4--Brian Vasey’s three-run home run in the sixth helped the Raiders (8-6, 2-3) beat visiting Canyons in a WSC game.

Tom Lunsford, who hit a solo home run in the fourth, and Jeff Naster each had two hits for the Raiders.

Mission 15, Compton 8--Marlon McKinney went three for four with three runs batted in and two runs scored to lead the Free Spirit (3-9-1, 1-3) in a Southern California Conference game.

San Francisco State 6, The Master’s 1--The Gators (9-13) scored four runs in 6 2/3 innings against Master’s starter Bart Jennings en route to a nonconference win in San Francisco.

The Mustangs (8-12) managed just four hits off four pitchers.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pierce 8, Moorpark 1--Mai-Chi Tieu lost only one game at No. 1 singles to lead Pierce (4-2, 2-2) in a WSC match at Pierce.

MEN’S TRACK

Moorpark, 109 1/2, Santa Barbara 38 1/2, Ventura 32--Jeff Ingalls won the 200 meters (21.9 seconds), high jump (6 feet 1) and long jump (21 feet 1 inch) for host Moorpark in a WSC meet.

WOMEN’S TRACK

Santa Barbara City 82, Moorpark 70, Ventura 16--Kristen Kleinhans of Ventura and Deana Fuess of Moorpark were double winners in the WSC meet at Moorpark.

Kleinhans won the shotput (34-4) and discus (112-11). Fuess took the 800 meters (2:24.4) and the 1,500 (5:14.6).
