Long Beach : Nonprofit Groups Get Land to Build Child-Care Center

The city has awarded land purchased with Community Development Block Grant funds to two nonprofit groups planning to build a child-care facility and townhouses for low- to moderate-income families.
The Community Improvement League will purchase nine parcels of land to the south and east of the Atlantic Avenue and Hill Street intersection for $1. The league must raise its own funds before it can build an 8,400-square-foot facility to care for 150 children, said Susan Shick, director of community development.
“The community rated child care as the No. 1 need of that community,” said Councilman Clarence Smith, whose district includes the city-owned property. “I think it’s time for us to develop that area.”
The Long Beach Housing Development Co., set up by the City Council to develop low-income housing projects, will take over the deed for six parcels of land west of Atlantic Avenue between Dayman and 19th streets. The company will seek bids and proposals to build and later sell 21 residential townhouses for low- and moderate-income families.
Councilman Warren Harwood opposed the action.
“Selling property for $1 doesn’t really appeal to me,” Harwood said.
