So little time, so many bargains.
In just nine hours on Saturday, the UCLA Art Council hopes to unload a hangar-ful of clothes and computers, furniture and fine art, sporting goods and small appliances--you name it--at its Thieves Market ’92.
Founded 38 years ago to benefit visual arts programs at the university, the council has collected thousands of items for this year’s showy sale of old and new. Among the most prized finds: two Boehm birds and a dozen Boehm plates, a large pastel self-portrait by Siqueiros, a small oil by Ted Gillian, a 1928 mint-condition Singer sewing machine, a 50-year-old, French-legged Janssen spinet piano, an antique Queen Anne chest of drawers and a red electric Go-Kart.
The clothing department will feature women’s and men’s outfits by St. Laurent, Escada, Chanel, Adolfo, Jaegar, Armani, Calvin Klein, Gucci and Valentino. Especially Valentino--a donor gave up a closetful of the French couturier’s finest, with the price tags still on.
