Azusa : $30,000 in Grants Disputed
Grants totaling $30,000 to three athletic leagues have sparked a controversy before the City Council.
In approving the grants Feb. 18, council members had said the money came from a city surplus. But Budget Director Jeff Craig said Monday that the city actually has a $3-million deficit. He said the money council members thought was a surplus was a reserve fund of $2.3 million from a Southern California Edison refund, which is earmarked for a new fire station.
Councilmen John R. Dangleis and Anthony Naranjo opposed giving the money, saying it did not follow budgetary procedure and was not fiscally prudent.
On Monday, Dangleis accused Mayor Eugene F. Moses of using the money to influence potential voters in next month’s election.
