Brande, Mohs to Coach Edison Boys’ Volleyball
Charlie Brande, former Corona del Mar volleyball coach, has been named co-coach of the Edison boys’ team along with Dave Mohs, Athletic Director Lyman Clower said Wednesday.
Brande and Mohs replace Tim Wetzel, who was dismissed Tuesday after failing to meet state coaching credential requirements, including a class in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Clower said.
Wetzel, son of Orange Coast College men’s volleyball Coach Bob Wetzel, was a walk-on coach at Edison.
“We just had a credential problem and couldn’t work it out,” Clower said. “Tim tried to work the CPR classes into his schedule, but he has another full-time job and he couldn’t work it out.”
Last fall, Brande was an assistant coach for the girls’ team under Mohs at Edison, a stint that was cut short by an appendicitis attack. Brande, one of the winningest club and high school coaches in county history, has been helping Bob Wetzel with the OCC men’s team this spring.
“We have a great girls’ staff here and Mohs set this up for us,” Clower said. “He and Charlie know all the kids and they’ll come in and help.”
Brande and Mohs will coach the team through the end of the season. Clower said he has set no timetable on hiring a new coach.
Brande and Mohs inherit one of the top teams in the county. Edison was ranked fourth in the Southern Section Division 4-A preseason coaches’ poll and finished second to Newport Harbor in the Orange County Championships Saturday.
The Chargers feature senior outside hitter Joe McCarthy, one of the top players in the section.
“They’re a good group of kids and I was panicking about what I was going to do,” Clower said.
