Two Ventura County women will be honored by the state Legislature on Monday for their community service.

Patricia Havens, 62, of Simi Valley and Melinda Wiman, 37, of Thousand Oaks are among 110 women who will receive the 1992 Women of the Year awards given by the Assembly and Senate.

Both women will receive the awards in Sacramento from the legislators who nominated them.

Havens, Simi Valley’s official historian, was nominated by Assemblywoman Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley) for her work promoting the city’s culture and researching its past.

Havens is director of the Simi Valley Historical Society Museum and Strathearn Historical Park. She has served on the Ventura County Cultural Heritage Board since 1975 and is researching a history book on Simi Valley.

Wiman was nominated by Assemblyman Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks). Last year, she founded a local chapter of Citizens Against Government Waste, a bipartisan group that opposes new taxes and what it views as government waste. She is forming a group to organize town hall meetings where issues such as the loss of jobs to foreign companies will be discussed.

Santa Barbara resident and Planned Parenthood board member Nancy Alexander was also nominated by Sen. Gary Hart (D-Santa Barbara) and Assemblyman Jack O’Connell (D-Carpinteria).
