COUNTYWIDE : Catholic Congress Attracts 20,000
More than 20,000 theologians, clergy and church volunteers gathered at the Anaheim Convention Center on Friday for a three-day education conference billed as the largest Catholic religious gathering in the United States.
Sponsored by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the 25th annual Religious Education Congress is a time of spiritual renewal for Catholics. The congress, titled “On Holy Ground,” features 228 workshops, including sessions on scriptural teachings, women in the church, drug and alcohol abuse and using a Gospel approach to help stem gang violence, among other topics.
“The theme ‘On Holy Ground’ reminds us that if we are one with our brothers and sisters, then the ground between us and around us is indeed holy ground, a place of encounter with God, our creator,” Cardinal Roger M. Mahony said.
Mahony joined 100 priests and bishops in welcoming delegates from the United States, Canada and the Philippines. During the weekend, there will be numerous speakers, including renowned author and screenwriter Maya Angelou.
