Hey, Woody, Funny Really Is Good Enough
Allen states that he “would be very disappointing in a conversation with a group of genuine intellectuals,” to which I would vehemently respond: “Not so!”
He underestimates himself; I’ll bet he could hold his own solidly. Your profile made me nostalgic for my growing-up years in his Manhattan, pre-World War II. Many of us aspired to be intellectuals and discovered that there is a world of difference between academics and intellectuals. It’s a matter of semantics that needs to be explored.
We assumed, as does Allen, that formal education and degrees symbolized intellectualism, only to discover that they could often be worlds apart. I wish I could plead with him to tackle them: Gena Rowlands in “Another Woman” was an excellent start, a poignant picture filled with his wisdom of the heart.
