LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Supervisors Vote to End Big Travel Allowances
Eliminating a key perk for many top bureaucrats, the Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to phase out hefty travel allowances paid to officials simply for driving their personal vehicles to work.
The board also approved a new format for the county’s annual budget that will provide more detail on expenditures. Both measures were proposed by Supervisor Gloria Molina, who called for greater accountability in county government and fewer perks for highly paid bureaucrats.
The monthly travel allowances--ranging from $400 to $525--are paid to 486 county employees, costing the county $2.7 million annually. Molina said that only a few bureaucrats--those who can prove they use their cars for county business--will keep their allowances.
The new budget format will break down how much money each department spends in categories such as travel and court-awarded damages.
