America West Changes Course: America West Airlines said it has dropped its effort to disband a committee of stockholders to speed the airline’s emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection later this year. In return, the committee agreed to cap its spending on professional fees at no more than $150,000 a month after spending more than $750,000 in its first five months of existence. The Phoenix-based airline filed a motion to disband the committee last month, saying the stockholders, primarily employees, essentially had no assets to protect and were wasting company funds on fees for lawyers and investment bankers.
