What’s the Score?: All is not peaceful in Pulitzer land following announcement of the coveted annual prizes on Tuesday. The Pulitzer board ignored the unanimous recommendation of the nominating jury for music, composers George Perle, Roger Reynolds and Harvey Sollberger--a move those three musicians have protested as “especially alarming because it occurred without consultation and without knowledge of either our standards or rationale. Such alterations by a committee without professional musical expertise guarantees, if continued, a lamentable devaluation of this uniquely important award.” The jury’s choice was Ralph Shapey’s “Concerto Fantastique,” which the board apparently found too difficult. The winner instead was Wayne Peterson’s “The Face of the Night, the Heart of the Dark,” which was the jury’s second choice.
