Cerritos : Mandatory Water Cutback Replaced by Voluntary Plan
Cerritos has ended mandatory water rationing, following on the heels of the Central Basin Municipal Water District, which ended its rationing requirements last week. Cerritos receives one-third of its water from the district.
In a 5-0 vote last week, the City Council immediately rescinded mandatory rationing and imposed a voluntary program to reduce water use by 10%. Water bills sent after April 1 will not be subject to penalties for excessive water use.
Officials said that under the mandatory plan, imposed in February, 1991, Cerritos achieved a 25%-per-month reduction in water use in comparison to consumption in 1989-90.
