San Diego : Fall From Truck on I-5 Ends in Death
A 27-year-old Rockland, Calif. man was killed instantly Saturday morning when he was struck by a car on I-5 in the Camp Pendleton area.
Gregory Paul Rankin stood up, opened the passenger door of a slow-moving pickup truck and fell onto the northbound side of the freeway about 1:30 a.m., said CHP officer Klaus Groeger.
Rankin landed on the shoulder of the road, then stood up and stepped into the slow lane of the freeway, where he was struck by a Volkswagen and instantly killed, Groeger said.
No one else was injured and no charges were filed against drivers of either vehicle, Groeger said. All other passengers in the pickup truck had been drinking, he said.
The accident occurred about 2.3 miles north of the Harbor Drive exit in Oceanside.
