Walking to No. 1: “Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers” did not sleep at the nation’s box office during the weekend. The horror film from Columbia, King’s first original screenplay, scored a big $10 million on 1,862 screens for its opening weekend, according to early industry estimates. Second place went to the sexual thriller “Basic Instinct,” which earned $8 million. The TriStar film has taken in $60 million in four weeks. In third place was Fox’s “White Men Can’t Jump,” with about $7.5 million in receipts. In three weeks, the basketball comedy has scored $39 million. Two other new releases had disappointing openings: “FernGully,” the animated rain-forest film from Fox, took in $3.4 million on 1,404 screens and Disney’s musical “Newsies” grossed a little more than $1 million on 1,223 screens from Friday through Sunday.
