Read Our Lips: We’re Cutting Your Tax Bill
WASHINGTON — Some guys have all the luck.
President Bush has had the taxes on his home in Kennebunkport, Maine, reduced.
The Bush property, on a rocky promontory with a dramatic view of the Atlantic Ocean, was reassessed at $1,914,000, down from $2.2 million. That means a savings of almost $4,000 in the President’s tax bill.
The town of Kennebunkport doubled the assessment on Bush’s property in 1990, but assessor Don Hemphill said that was done without getting a look inside the 26-room, wood-shingled home.
“We had to do a guess-timate, basically,” he said. After Bush’s aides persuaded the assessor to take a closer look, Hemphill’s people trooped through the heavily guarded house.
“There wasn’t any argument,” he said of the decision to reassess. “We had to make some adjustments to correct our numbers.”
