Fire Damages Northridge Company

Firefighters doused a blaze early Sunday that gutted the back of a Northridge manufacturing company where hazardous chemicals were stored, authorities said.

The fire gutted the rear of a circuit-board manufacturing plant, and a hazardous materials team helped dispose of runoff water containing chemicals used in the manufacturing process, said Michael Little, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

It took 110 firefighters 78 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which started at 3:50 a.m. on the grounds of the Century Circuit Corp. There were no injuries and no evacuation was ordered because authorities determined that residents living within half a mile of the business were not in danger, Little said.

The chemical-laden runoff was diverted to a lower portion of the property in the 19400 block of Londelius Street, and the area was watched by Los Angeles County health department officials until the water was vacuumed up and disposed of elsewhere, Little said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, he said. Authorities did not have an estimate of the damage.
