The city has begun work on a $19.3-million sewer line which will bypass Mission Bay. The nearly four-mile stretch of pipe is expected to improve water quality in the bay, which accounted for 1,500 days of partial closure between 1980 and 1988. The city has already apologized to neighboring homeowners for the expected traffic delays. The project should be completed by December, 1993.

Mission Bay, with its parks, beaches and boating facilities, is San Diego’s premier playground, attracting tourists as well as residents. However, the bay’s reputation has been stained by an ongoing series of sewage spills that has left its waters contaminated much of the time. The illustration above shows one step the city is taking to clean up the bay’s reputation and its less-than pristine waters.
