World IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : Winnie Mandela’s Alibi Is Disputed
A co-defendant in Winnie Mandela’s kidnaping and assault trial said he lied to protect her and that she viciously beat four young men, the Sunday Times of Johannesburg said. The paper quoted John Morgan as saying Mandela’s alibi was false and that she was at home in Soweto in December, 1988, when the assaults took place. One of the four victims died, and Mandela, the wife of African National President Nelson Mandela, ordered Morgan to remove the body, Morgan told the paper. The Times quoted Morgan as saying he decided to make his story public after both were convicted and Mandela refused to pay legal costs for his appeal.
