David Justice, suffering from a strained lower back, was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Atlanta Braves.

Justice, who was batting only .059 (one for 17) with seven strikeouts in the Braves’ first five games, was a late scratch from the starting lineup on Sunday.

“He was in the lineup today but when he came on the field, he said he couldn’t play,” Brave Manager Bobby Cox said.

Justice, who hit .275 with 21 home runs and 87 runs batted in last season, sat out almost two months of the 1991 season because of a similar injury to his back.

Cox said Brian Hunter will replace Justice as the Braves’ starting right fielder.

The Braves recalled Francisco Cabrera from their Richmond farm club of the International League.
