The Navy on Tuesday identified a Greek sailor killed earlier this week when his car veered off a road and into San Diego Bay.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Nikolas Karaiskos, 18, died after his car sank south of Pier 14 at the 32nd Street Naval Station. A companion, Petty Officer 3rd Class Demetris Hitos, 20, told authorities he and Karaiskos struggled to the water’s surface after the crash, Navy spokeswoman Kathy Cook said.

Karaiskos, who could not swim, held on to a line connected to a barge, as Hitos went for help, Cook said. When Hitos returned, Karaiskos had slipped back under water. Divers found his body shortly after.

The sailors were being trained two serve on U.S. Navy ships that are being decommissioned and turned over to the Greek navy, Cook said.
