HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : 7th-Inning Hit by Bernas Gives Kennedy 2-1 Victory

Joe Bernas singled home pinch-runner Pablo Perez with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Kennedy High to a 2-1 victory over San Diego Mar Vista on Thursday in a first-round game of the Las Vegas baseball tournament at Clark High.

David Bourne started the Cougar rally when he was hit by a pitch with one out. Darrin McCall doubled to put runners at second and third before Bernas came through with his second hit of the game.

Miguel Diaz (3-0) pitched a six-hitter for Kennedy (10-4).

In other baseball games:

Royal 4, Newbury Park 3--Royal (10-4) scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to erase a two-run deficit in the third-place game of the Glendale tournament at Stengel Field.

In the inning, a run-scoring single by Ryan Martinez brought Royal to within 2-1 and Dave Brown followed with a walk to load the bases.

Gene Strojek then doubled down the first-base line to drive in three runs.

Senior right-hander Matt Goebel (4-1) went the distance, allowed six hits, struck out six and walked five.

Steve Acosta had two hits for Newbury Park. Tim Farris took the loss for the Panthers.

Buckley 4, Crossroads 3--Buckley scored four runs in the sixth inning--all on squeeze bunts--and thwarted rallies in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to defeat host Crossroads in a Delphic League game. It was Buckley’s first victory against Crossroads.

Buckley’s Taryll Jackson scattered four hits, struck out six and allowed three unearned runs in seven innings.

The teams combined for one hit--by Crossroads--through five innings before Buckley (5-5-1, 1-1) scored four runs on one hit in the sixth inning, highlighted by Pat Fields’ two-run squeeze bunt. Crossroads answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning with the help of three errors and a balk.

Buckley turned a double play in the seventh, and the game ended when Jackson picked off a runner at first.

On Fields’ squeeze, John Hanish scored the first run and, when Crossroads’ catcher threw to first in an attempt to put out Fields, Chad Wehba scored. Jackson and Steve Moon squeezed home Chris Irwin and Field to finish the rally.

Hoover 8, Burbank 1--Andrew Spencer went three for three and teammates Joby Lewis, Nate Dishington, Gilbert Valenzuela and Robert Ruiz each added two hits as Hoover (8-3-1) won the consolation championship of the Babe Herman tournament at Stengel Field.

Pitchers Don Kinney and Kevin Deitch combined on a two-hitter. Kinney, who has three saves, went the first five innings for his first win.

Hueneme 8, San Francisco St. Ignacius 7 (eight innings)--Adam Anaya’s fourth hit drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning of a first-round game of the San Luis Obispo tournament.

In the inning, Juan Ponce opened with a single to right-center.

Mike Ortega’s sacrifice bunt moved Ponce to second and Anaya singled to left to win it for Hueneme (7-6-1), which had a season-high 17 hits.

Casey Bolen also had four hits for Hueneme, drove in two runs and stole three bases.

Chris Gonzales, Raudel Flores and Ponce each added two hits for Hueneme.

Right-hander Frank Adame had an eventful 5 2/3 innings for Hueneme. He struck out 12, walked six and hit two.

St. Bonaventure 9, Carpinteria 4--Winning pitcher Trevor Haba went two for three with three runs batted in and teammate Jose Payan added two hits and three RBIs to lead St. Bonaventure (6-7, 2-4) in a Tri-Valley League game at Carpinteria (2-5).

With the score tied, 4-4, in the sixth, Payan hit a two-out, two-run single to key a six-run inning. Haba yielded five hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts.

SOFTBALL

Crescenta Valley 1, Arcadia 0--Amy Colburn’s single in the first inning drove home J.J. Cannon with the game’s lone run in a Pacific League game at Arcadia.

Senior right-hander Stacy Atwood (13-1) tossed a three-hitter, struck out 12 and walked one. She has not allowed an earned run this season in 75 innings.

Colburn had two of four hits for Crescenta Valley (13-1, 2-0). Arcadia (10-4, 1-1) did not advance a runner beyond second base.

Canyon 4, Santa Paula 3 (10 innings)--Linda Osborne singled home Charisse Lightfoot with the winning run to end the marathon nonleague game at Canyon.

Lightfoot (two hits) singled to open the inning and was sacrificed to second by Allison Day before Osborne’s hit.

Keri Lemasters and Nadine Ivanosky each added two hits for Canyon (11-3). Santa Paula is 4-7.

Campbell Hall 11, Brentwood 0--Pitcher Kasey Cannon (7-2) helped herself at the plate, going two for three with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs, to lead the host Vikings (8-2, 3-0) to a Delphic League win.

Elena Dubinsky was three for three with two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI for Campbell Hall in a game stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Viewpoint 11, Faith Baptist 1--Jennifer Martin pitched a three-hitter and had a two-run double as Viewpoint (2-3) won a nonleague game at Faith Baptist.

Leah Popielinski had three hits and three RBIs for Viewpoint.

Harvard-Westlake 19, Marlborough 0--Lyndsay Sloane pitched a five-inning no-hitter as Harvard-Westlake (7-4, 3-2) won a San Fernando League game shortened by the 10-run rule.

Sloane, a senior right-hander, struck out eight and helped herself with a double and three runs. Tiffany Zwicker hit a bases-loaded home run in the six-run third inning. Cari Schwartz homered and tripled.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Providence d. Oakwood, 15-11, 15-4, 15-7--John Buckley had 20 kills and Joey Menez added 22 assists to lead the host Pioneers (1-11, 1-4) to their first win of the season in a Liberty League match.

Oakwood fell to 0-5 in league play.

Calabasas d. Cate, 7-15, 15-6, 15-10, 16-14--Patrick Haynes had 12 kills and Andrew McFadden added eight to guide the host Coyotes (6-4) to a nonleague win.
