BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Mariners Lose DH in Snafu
A lineup card foul-up caused confusion Thursday night in the game at Chicago between the Seattle Mariners and White Sox.
Seattle’s official lineup card listed two first basemen, Pete O’Brien and Tino Martinez, instead of a first baseman and a designated hitter. White Sox Manager Gene Lamont caught the mistake in the fourth inning.
As a result, starting pitcher Rich DeLucia had to assume O’Brien’s spot in the lineup and the Mariners lost their DH.
Dave Cochrane batted for DeLucia in the fourth inning and remained in the game at shortstop and relief pitcher Jim Acker took over the ninth spot in the batting order in place of starting shortstop Rich Amaral.
The Cincinnati Reds activated relief pitcher Rob Dibble, who spent three weeks on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis, and put first baseman Hal Morris on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken right hand.
Dibble said he is eager to return to action.
“The only way I get something out of pitching is when some guy is trying to drive the ball back at my face,” he said.
