Abortion-Rights Activists Prepare Attempt to Counter Operation Rescue in Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Hundreds of abortion-rights activists held practice drills outside clinics Friday preparing to counter an Operation Rescue campaign this week to stop women from getting abortions in Buffalo.
The protest strategy follows those last summer in Wichita, Kan., where anti-abortion protesters spent about six weeks trying to close abortion clinics there. The three clinics closed for one week and police made 2,600 arrests.
Early Friday in Buffalo, a few abortion opponents showed up at clinics.
But Monday, Operation Rescue and other anti-abortion groups plan to begin a two- to four-week siege at Buffalo clinics, and possibly one hospital and some private doctors’ offices, organizers have said.
